Shiny from Rstudio is the leading web application framework for R. At Quanopt, we regularly use it to enable web-based, collaborative exploration of experimental data. (Sending around plots & scripts and navigating heaps of static figures tends to get old rather fast.) We are going to give an overview of Shiny and through examples, an introduction into its core programming concepts. The ways to weave Shiny together with other visualization solutions client-side will be discussed and our main Shiny-supported analysis scenarios will be also demonstrated. We conclude with our experiences on the types of problems that Shiny excels at solving and its main limitations – technological as well as conceptual.
